Long Bio

Gabriele Piccoli is Professor of Information Systems in the Management of Technology and Strategy department at the Grenoble Ecole de Management. Prior to moving to Grenoble, Prof. Piccoli was Associate Professor of Information Systems at Cornell University (USA) and subsequently Associate Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Sassari. Prof. Piccoli began his career as an Assistant Professor at Cornell in 2000, receiving indefinite tenure at the School of Hotel Administration and Hospitality Management upon his promotion to Associate Professor in 2006.

As an invited faculty member, Prof. Piccoli has completed the Launching New Ventures executive education program (2009) and the Delivering Information Services executive education program (2006) from the Harvard Business School in Cambridge, MA (USA), where he also attended the Art and Craft of the Case Method program (2001) as a student. He received his Ph.D. (2000) and a Master's of Business Administration (1998) from the EJ Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA (USA). He received a Laurea in Economia e Commercio (1996) from the University of Pavia, Pavia (Italy).

Prof. Piccoli is a highly cited scholar (h index: 12 computed on Jan 26th, 2009) and has served as Associate Editor of the MIS Quarterly (2007 Impact Factor: 5.826) from January 2007 to December 2008 and currently serves on the editorial board of the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly and is the editor of the Cutter Benchmark Review. He has also served on the editorial board of the Decision Sciences Journal and has been a reviewer for all the other leading journals in the field - including Information Systems Research and Management Science. Prof. Piccoli is heavily involved in the international scientific community of information systems scholars and is the Program Co-chair of the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) 2012. He is the Doctoral Consortium Co-Chair of the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2009 and he is the Co-Chair of the Italian Conference of the Association of Information Systems (ItAIS) 2009. He has been actively involved in leadership roles at international information systems conferences over the years serving as Review Chair for ICIS 2002 and Placement Services Co-Chair for ICIS 2001. Prof. Piccoli was a Camp Counselor at the Junior Faculty Workshop of the American Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) 2005 and has co-chaired a number of Mini-Tracks at AMCIS, ItAIS and at the Mediterranean Conference of on Information Systems (MCIS).

Prof. Piccoli has visited and held teaching posts at a number of Universities. He served as adjunct professor at the University of Pavia, as adjunct lecturer of Information Systems at the AB Freeman School of Business at Tulane University, and as instructor at the EJ Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University. He also taught and held seminars at IULM in Milan (Italy), LUISS in Rome (Italy) and LUIC in Castellanza (Italy). His instructional and pedagogical skills have been recognized with multiple excellence in teaching awards for undergraduate education (Cornell University 2006 and Louisiana State University 1999), graduate education (Cornell University 2004) and executive education (Tulane University 2002).

Prof. Piccoli's is the authors of the book Information Systems for Managers: Text and Cases, published by John Wiley & Sons (ISBN: 0470087039X). His recent research interests span strategic information systems and the use of information systems to enable customer service. This work has been supported by a number of grants from public agencies and private institutions, including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Advanced Practice Council of the Society for Information Management, the Center for Hospitality Research, Cornell University, the Teradata division on NCR, Corporation and the Marketing Science Institute. Prof. Piccoli's work in this area has been published in the leading Information Systems journals, including MIS Quarterly (IF: 5.826), Decision Sciences Journal (IF: 1.435), Communications of the ACM (IF: 1.593), Harvard Business Review (IF: 1.323) and MIS Quarterly Executive. Work in this area has received over 200 citations to date and was awarded at the 2003 Society for Information Management Paper Awards Competition (3rd Place).

Prof. Piccoli's earlier work focused on the application of network and Internet technologies in support of internal organizational activities, such as training and teamwork. Specifically, he became a recognized author in the areas of virtual learning environments and virtual teams with two highly cited articles published in MIS Quarterly (cited 248 and 75 times respectively) and other leading Information Systems journals including The DATABASE for Advances in Information Systems, Information Technology and People and Information Technology and Management. His work on virtual learning environments has garnered 270 citations to date while his research on virtual teams has been cited in excess of 315 times. Work in this area received the Research Award from the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University (2003) and the lead to the Prof. Piccoli's selection for the Doctoral Consortium at the International Conference on Information Systems (1999).
